Program Overview

OPSU’s Science of Reading Micro-Credential Series prepares educators and pre-service teachers with in-depth knowledge and applied skills in reading instruction. Grounded in federal and state literacy mandates, this stackable program guides learners from foundational literacy theory to diagnostic practices and instructional application. The badges are embedded in the Elementary Education degree but are also available to certified teachers as professional development.

Badge Titles and Skills

Science of Reading Foundations (EDUC 3313)

Covers foundational knowledge of reading science, including cognitive, linguistic, and instructional frameworks, and an overview of legislation impacting literacy instruction.

Skill Tags:

Science of Reading Diagnostics (EDUC 3253)

Focuses on the diagnosis of reading difficulties, perscriptive teaching, and intervention strategies for K-8 students based on evdence-based practices.

Science of Reading Application (EDUC 3233)

Emphasizes application of systematic insturctional strategies, scaffolding, and corrective methods in real-world elementary reading instruction settings.

Delivery Format

Courses are available online, in-person, or in hybrid formats. All badges require the completion of tutoring activities, assessments, and clinical experiences with K-8 students. Each badge is designed to be completed in one semester.

Enrollment & Credit

These credentials are embedded within OPSU’s Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and also available as stand-alone professional development for certified educators. They are for-credit and count toward state-mandated training requirements.
