F1 Student Employment
On-Campus
An F-l student may accept employment only after obtaining a letter from their future on-campus employer. This letter is required to apply for a social security card. On-campus employment is limited to part-time (20 hours or less per week) during fall and spring semesters. It may be full-time (more than 20-hours a week) during summer and official university holidays.
To obtain permission for on-campus employment, bring the following documents to apply for a social security card:
- Valid 1-94
- Form 1-20
- Valid Passport
- Employer letter indicating permission to accept on-campus employment
- Letter from International Coordinator verifying student status
- Social Security Application
Off-Campus
Employment Off-Campus
Generally, off-campus employment is prohibited. There are certain exceptions, students should visit the International Student Coordinator for those details.

If a student’s program requires an internship or practicum off-campus, students should notify the International Student Coordinator about the timing of the internship. Information will need to be provided to the coordinator to request the CPT authorization.

Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F-1 students to gain practical experience in their
field of study.
- Post-completion OPT takes place after the student completes all degree requirements.
- It can last up to 12 months per educational level.
- Employment must be directly related to the student’s major.
- Students may work full-time during post-completion OPT.
Timing for OPT applications:
- You may apply up to 90 days before your program end date.
- USCIS must receive your OPT application no later than 60 days after your program
end date.
- You must also be in the U.S. and have an active SEVIS record at the time of filing.
Planning for OPT application:
• The international student coordinator will hold an informational session with all students who are interested in OPT each semester. Information will be sent to students as the sessions are scheduled.

The I-765 application should be completed online and include:
• Filing fee
• Copy of OPT-recommended Form I-20 • Passport, visa, I-94
• Photo (per USCIS specifications)
USCIS must receive the I-765 within 30 days of the DSO’s recommendation in SEVIS. Wait for USCIS Processing
- Typical processing time: 1.5–3 months
- You will receive a receipt notice (Form I-797C) by email or mail.
Receive Employment Authorization Document (EAD) Once approved, USCIS mails the EAD card, which shows:
- OPT validity dates
- Category: “(c)(3)(B)” for post-completion OPT

You may begin employment only after receiving your EAD and on or after the start date listed on the card.
Maintain Status While on OPT
- Report your employer information in SEVIS (via your school’s portal or your DSO).
- You cannot accrue more than 90 days of unemployment during OPT.
- Keep your address, employer, and contact info current.
