OPSU Sponsors Five OK-LSAMP Scholars

Oklahoma Panhandle State University is proud to be one of twelve institutions participating in the Oklahoma Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (OK-LSAMP) program. This program provides resources to minority undergraduate students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs.

Scholars are selected through a rigorous application process and must participate in activities that will prepare them for graduate school and successful work in the STEM workforce. Scholars will have the opportunity to conduct research alongside some of the most respected experts in the fields, attend research symposiums, attend and present their research at conferences, and prepare themselves to apply to the graduate schools of their dreams.

Provost, Dr. Julie Dinger commented, “We are grateful to Ms. Allen and the OK-LSAMP Program for this opportunity, and look forward to our students taking part in first class undergraduate research experiences in this program. We expect great things from these students now and in the future.”

This year, OPSU is proud to sponsor five OK-LSAMP scholars; Jesus Mesta (Computer Information Systems), Isabel Ray (Biology), Stacy Jimenez (Biology), Nora Castillo (Computer Information Systems), and Lucero Robles Garcia (Biology). The scholars will navigate the OK-LSAMP program under Campus Program Director Valentina Allen (El Centro) and their selected research mentors.

“We have an extraordinary group of young talented students who are going to do amazing things in their field. I can’t wait to provide an update to faculty, staff, and their classmates on their research topics of choice. These scholars have incredible ideas, and they are challenging the current state of science,” Allen states.

The scholars are attending their first research symposium this week hosted by Oklahoma State University.
