Dr. Charla Lewis Appointed as Dean of the College of Arts and Education at Oklahoma Panhandle State University

Oklahoma Panhandle State University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Charla Lewis as the new Dean of the College of Arts and Education. Dr. Lewis brings a wealth of experience, expertise, and a strong commitment to academic excellence to her new role.


With an impressive academic background and years of dedicated service in higher education, Dr. Lewis is well-positioned to lead the College of Arts and Education at OPSU. Her comprehensive knowledge of arts and education and exceptional leadership skills will undoubtedly elevate the college’s reputation and contribute to its continued growth.


Dr. Lewis has taught at Panhandle State since 2012. Her roles have included the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Education, Director of Teacher Education, Department Chair of Music, Director of Instrumental Music, Director of Music Education, and Assistant Professor. Her commitment to fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment has resulted in increased student engagement and improved outcomes. Under her guidance, the education department experienced remarkable growth and achieved national recognition for its programs.


Dr. Lewis earned a Doctorate of Education from Bradley University with an emphasis on “Educational Leadership in Higher Education”, a Master of Music Education from Emporia State University, and a Bachelor of Music Education with a vocal emphasis and an instrumental endorsement from OPSU.


“I am honored and excited to serve Oklahoma Panhandle State University as the Dean of the College of Arts and Education,” said Dr. Charla Lewis. “I am deeply committed to the transformative power of arts and education, and I look forward to working with the talented faculty, staff, and students at OPSU to enhance the educational experience and empower our students to achieve their fullest potential.”


As the new Dean of the College of Arts and Education, Dr. Lewis will oversee various programs, including visual arts, music, education, and more. She plans to leverage her extensive experience in curriculum development and program enhancement to enrich the academic offerings further and foster interdisciplinary collaboration within the college.


“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Charla Lewis as the new Dean of the College of Arts and Education,” said Dr. Theresa Billiot, Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs. “Her outstanding leadership skills, academic expertise, and commitment to student success make her the ideal choice to lead our College of Arts and Education into the future. We are confident she will bring a fresh perspective and contribute significantly to our institution’s continued growth and excellence.”


Dr. Lewis’s appointment as the Dean of the College of Arts and Education at Oklahoma Panhandle State University is effective July 1, 2023. The university is excited to have her on board and is looking forward to the positive impact she will make in her new role.
