Goodwell, Okla- Dr. LaCreta Bowen, OPSU’s athletic trainer, was recently voted the university’s Staff Employee of the Semester by the Staff Association. The recognition highlights her commitment to the student-athletes, her colleagues, and the OPSU community.
Widely respected for the care and consistency she brings to her work, Dr. Bowen’s role as an athletic trainer for the university often places her at the center of student-athlete health and well-being. Whether she’s managing injury recovery, preparing athletes to compete, or offering steady support through the ups and downs that can come with college athletics, Dr. Bowen approaches every task with empathy and a clear dedication to the success of others.
Her work is driven by more than just her daily to-do list. “What I enjoy most is building meaningful relationships while making a real difference,” Dr. Bowen said. “Every day brings a new challenge, and I take pride in being someone student-athletes can trust, not just for physical care, but also for encouragement and guidance.”
Her impact is clear to those who work with her. Athletic Director Victor Esparza shared,” Dr. Bowen is one of the most dependable people on our team. She cares about our athletes, brings a high level of expertise, and is always willing to go the extra mile. OPSU is better because of her.”
Dr. Bowen also finds fulfillment in her role as an educator. One standout moment from this past semester came while teaching her Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries course. A student who had struggled early on had a breakthrough. They connected not only with the technical material but also with the deeper purpose behind athletic training. “That moment wasn’t just about academics,” Dr. Bowen said. “It was about watching the student gain confidence and passion for helping others. It reminded me that teaching isn’t just about lectures, it’s about planting the seeds that will shape the next generation of Coaches and Healthcare Professionals.”
For Dr. Bowen, being named Employee of the Semester is a meaningful honor. “It signifies that the work I do, whether behind the scenes or in direct support of the university community, is appreciated and valued,” she said. “It reinforces that making a difference, no matter how big or small, matters.”
She credits the people around her for keeping her motivated. “At the end of the day, knowing that my actions contribute to a stronger, more unified team keeps me going.”
“Dr. Bowen exemplifies what it means to serve with heart and purpose,” said OPSU President Dr. Julie Dinger. “Her unwavering commitment to our students and campus community uplifts everyone around her. We are proud to honor her as Employee of the Semester, a recognition that reflects the deep respect and admiration she’s earned from all of us at OPSU.”
Dr. Bowen’s recognition as Employee of the Semester reflects her tireless dedication to OPSU and the impact she continues to make every day.
