Goodwell, Okla. — Oklahoma Panhandle State University is proud to announce Harrison Funderburk as the 2025 recipient of the prestigious J.R.P. Sewell Achievement Award. This honor, rooted in a tradition of excellence since 1949, is presented each year to a graduating senior who exemplifies the highest standards of scholarship, leadership, and citizenship.
A Math Education major from Chickasha, Oklahoma, Harrison has made a lasting impact at OPSU through his commitment to academics, athletics, and service. A dedicated member of the university’s Shooting Sports Team, he has balanced his time between the classroom and competition, all while cultivating meaningful connections across campus.
Harrison’s journey to the Panhandle was shaped by mentors who inspired him to pursue a future in education. In turn, he’s spent his time at OPSU preparing to be that same kind of mentor for future generations. His commitment to giving back is further evidenced by his participation in the Panhandle Promise Scholarship program, which supports students who pledge to teach in the region after graduation.
Dr. Charla Lewis, Vice President of Academic Affairs at OPSU, said, “Harrison represents the very best of what we hope to see in our graduates: intelligence, drive, and deep commitment to serving others. His dedication to academic excellence and his desire to give back to the Panhandle community make him a perfect recipient of the J.R.P. Sewell Award. We are incredibly proud of all he’s accomplished and look forward to seeing the lasting impact he’ll have as an educator and coach.”
In Fall 2025, Harrison will continue his teaching and coaching career at Hooker High School, where he plans to bring the same passion and integrity that defined his time at OPSU into his new role in the classroom and on the field.
New Head Football Coach at Hooker High School, Tanner McBee, said, “We’re thrilled to have Harrison officially join our coaching staff. During his student teaching, he demonstrated a deep understanding of the game and the ability to connect with the players. His dedication and leadership make him a valuable addition to our team, and I have no doubt he’ll continue to develop our student athletes on and off the field.”
The J.R.P. Sewell Award, named in honor of a visionary leader instrumental in the university’s founding, celebrates students like Harrison, those who embody the spirit of leadership and service that define Panhandle excellence. As part of the award, Harrison received an elegant watch to commemorate his achievements and symbolize the lasting legacy of the Sewell tradition.
For over 70 years, the J.R.P. Sewell Award has recognized students who leave a mark on the university and the community. Harrison joins a distinguished list of recipients who have carried the values of integrity, service, and leadership into their lives beyond OPSU.
Please join us in congratulating Harrison Funderburk on this well-deserved honor. His story is a reminder of the power of education, mentorship, and community, and the bright future that lies ahead for Panhandle graduates.
